Detailed Description
In this ESL lesson plan for intermediate and advanced students, we’re taking a look at some seriously strange laws from around the world. To kick things off, students are asked to share any weird laws they’ve come across. It’s a fun way to get everyone talking and thinking.
Next up is a reading and speaking activity. There are twelve different laws listed, some of them real and some of them made up. The goal here is for the students to discuss each law and decide whether they think it’s real or not. From the peculiar rule in Singapore that bans the sale of gum, to the surprising restriction in Madrid that forbids asking the time between certain hours, there’s plenty to get students talking and debating.
After that, there’s an exercise focused on language collocations, specifically with the words “law” and “crime”. Students are given a list of potential collocations and have to identify the one that doesn’t quite fit. It’s a great way to help students improve their language accuracy and become more aware of common English language patterns.
To finish up, students are asked to get creative and come up with their own strange laws. They’re encouraged to think about where their law would apply and what kind of problem it’s trying to solve. Then they’ll share their law with the class and everyone can vote on the funniest one.
Overall, this lesson plan offers a mix of reading, speaking, and creative thinking, all wrapped up in an engaging and humorous theme. With a printable PDF worksheet and in-depth teacher’s notes, it’s a great choice for teachers looking to spice up their ESL classes with something a bit different.
