Detailed Description
In today’s lesson, students find out where Halloween comes from, learn the vocabulary that goes with it and practise the difference between -ed and -ing adjectives (scared or scary?).
The lesson begins with a kickoff conversation about Halloween and days to remember the dead, followed by a vocabulary exercise where students match eight Halloween words to their definitions and then use them in conversation.
Next, students read about the history of Halloween, from the Celtic festival of Samhain to American trick-or-treating, and answer questions on the text.
The grammar focus explains -ed and -ing adjectives, and students practise them by talking about their own feelings. They then match some well-known superstitions and talk about them.
The lesson ends with a fun filler game: the class tells a spooky story together, one sentence each.
